How Robax® HeatWraps Work

Robax® HeatWraps with ThermaCare® Technology’s patented Heat Cells use controlled, deep penetrating therapeutic heat to provide back pain relief for up to 16 hours. By using a combination of ingredients that react when exposed to oxygen, the HeatWraps are active for 8 hours, and you can feel the benefit of heat therapy for another 8 hours, for up to 16 hours of back pain relief. Robax® HeatWraps with Thermacare® Technology also help relax, soothe and unlock tight muscles.

On opening, the Robax® HeatWrap with ThermaCare® Technology reaches therapeutic temperature in 30 minutes or less – about 3º C above body temperature.

When To Use Robax® Heatwraps

Apply Robax® HeatWraps at the first stages of pain—early treatment can help keep the pain from interfering with your life.

HeatWraps can be used on various types of pain, including:

  • Back aches
  • Sore and tight muscles
  • Overexertion
  • Sprains and strains

When used as directed, you can use Robax® HeatWraps with Thermacare® Technology for 8 hours a day, 7 days in a row for back pain relief.

Note: Heat should not be used on areas of swelling and bruising. (If swelling occurs, use ice, and then apply heat after the swelling has gone away at least 48 hours.) Do not use for more than 8 hours in any 24-hour period. For best results, use as directed for the full 8 hours.

Ingredients:

Activated charcoal, iron powder, sodium chloride, sodium thiosulfate, sodium polyacrolate, and water.

Heat-generating cells are an advanced combination of ingredients that react when exposed to oxygen. On opening, a HeatWrap reaches therapeutic temperature in 30 minutes or less – about 3º C above body temperature. Each HeatWrap delivers controlled, therapeutic heat for long-lasting relief. Even after the HeatWrap is removed, you can feel the benefit of heat therapy for many hours. Unlike creams and rubs, a HeatWrap’s heat cells transmit deep, penetrating therapeutic heat to the site of pain to relax, soothe and unlock tight muscles.

Usage

To begin heat therapy with Robax® Lower Back & Hip HeatWraps, follow these easy steps:

  1. Tear open the pouch when ready to use. It may take up to 30 minutes for the HeatWrap to reach its therapeutic temperature.
  2. Peel away paper to reveal adhesive side.
  3. Place on pain area with adhesive side toward skin.
  4. Position the wrap where you want it by lightly pressing the tabs into place on your skin. Make adjustments. When you are satisfied with the HeatWrap’s placement, rub over the adhesive tabs firmly to ‘lock’ them in place.
  5. If you are 55 years of age or older, wear the HeatWrap over a layer of clothing and not directly against your skin.
  6. For maximum effectiveness, we recommend you wear a HeatWrap for 8 hours.

Do not use for more than 8 hours in any 24-hour period.

Be sure that your skin in the area you are going to apply the HeatWrap is clean, dry, and free of makeup, recently applied skin moisturizers, lotions, and any other topical products (especially medicated products and patches).

PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS BEFORE USE. ADDITIONAL WARNINGS ARE INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE INSERT. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF BURNS, FIRE, AND PERSONAL INJURY, THIS PRODUCT MUST BE USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE USE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS.

Warnings

THIS PRODUCT CAN CAUSE BURNS AND SKIN IRRITATION. Your risk of burning increases as you age. If you are 55 years of age or older, wear HeatWraps over a layer of clothing and not directly against your skin. Check skin frequently during use for signs of skin irritation or burns. Each heat cell contains iron (~2 grams), which can be harmful if ingested. If ingested, rinse mouth with water and call a poison control centre right away. If heat cell contents come in contact with your skin or eyes, rinse right away with water. Never heat product in microwave or attempt to reheat as heat wrap could catch fire. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

STOP USE AND ASK A PHYSICIAN if you experience any discomfort, burning, swelling, rash, or other changes in your skin that persist where the wrap is worn. If after 7 days your pain gets worse or remains unchanged, this may be a sign of a more serious condition.

ASK A PHYSICIAN BEFORE USE if you have DIABETES, poor circulation or heart disease, or rheumatoid arthritis, or you are pregnant.

Ingestion Warning

Each heat cell contains iron (~2 grams), which can be harmful if ingested. If ingested, rinse mouth with water and call a poison control centre right way. If heat cell contents come in contact with your skin or eyes, rinse right away with water.

Microwave Warning

Never heat product in microwave or attempt to reheat as heat wrap could catch fire.

Do Not Use:

  • With pain rubs, medicated lotions, creams, or ointments
  • On unhealthy, damaged, or broken skin
  • On areas of bruising or swelling that have occurred within 48 hours
  • On people unable to follow all use instructions or remove the product, including young children, infants, and some elderly
  • On areas of the body where heat cannot be felt
  • With other forms of heat
  • With heat cells applied to the back of the knee, inner fold of elbow, or the palm of the hand

When Using this Product

If product feels too hot or skin is painful: Remove the wrap, check your skin, and either stop use or wear over clothing if no signs of skin irritation or a burn are present.

Do not place extra pressure over the product such as leaning against hard surfaces, or wearing under tight clothing, a tight waistband, or a belt.

Do not use for more than 8 hours in any 24-hour period. Consult the carton or pouch for specific use directions.

Stop use and ask a physician: If you experience any discomfort, swelling, rash, or other changes in your skin that persist where the wrap is worn.

If after 7 days of product use the pain you are treating gets worse or remains unchanged. This may be a sign of a more serious condition.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Skin Warning

THIS PRODUCT CAN CAUSE BURNS AND SKIN IRRITATION. Your risk of burning increases as you age. If you are 55 years or older, wear a Robax® HeatWrap Lower Back & Hip product over a layer of clothing or over a layer of towel/wash cloth and not directly against your skin. For all products, check skin frequently during use for signs of skin irritations or burns. If you find any, remove immediately. Do not place heat cells on the back of the knee or the inside fold of elbow, as this may increase your risk of burns. Do not use HeatWraps in the same location on your body for more than 8 hours in any 24-hour period.

Aging Skin Warning

With age, the skin becomes thinner and your circulation changes. Good blood circulation is needed to remove heat from your skin and protect it from burning. In general, beginning around your 50s some people can experience a burn at a lower temperature than they would have when they were younger. If you feel your sensitivity to heat has changed over time, wear the Robax® HeatWrap over clothing or a towel instead of directly against your skin. Check your skin frequently for signs of a burn and consider wearing for a shorter time than the full 8 hours. Wearing over clothing or a towel will reduce (but may not eliminate) your chances of experiencing a burn. If you are still concerned, consult with your physician as the one most familiar with your health who can determine the best treatment options for your pain.

Diabetes Warning

All diabetics should consult with their physician prior to using Robax® HeatWraps or any heating product. Some diabetics are not good candidates for heat therapy and are at increased risk of burning because of circulatory problems and decreased nerve function. In these individuals, heat therapy is not appropriate because poor circulation leads to higher skin temperature and a greater risk of burning. With decreased nerve function, it is less likely that a diabetic would feel it if a burn was occurring. Some diabetics also have difficulty healing from a skin wound. If you are diabetic and your physician recommends Robax® HeatWraps, wear the product over clothing or a towel instead of directly against your skin.

Poor Circulation or Heart Disease Warning

The body responds to heat by dilating (or widening) the blood vessels in the skin (termed vasodilation). This brings more blood towards the surface of the skin and allows for the blood to take the heat away from the skin surface. This is similar to the redness in your skin after taking a hot shower or bath. Some individuals who have poor circulation or heart disease lack the ability to bring this blood supply to the surface of the skin and are unable to keep the skin temperature low enough to avoid a burn. If you have poor circulation or heart disease, you should consult with your physician to determine if you are a good candidate for heat therapy. If your physician recommends Robax® HeatWraps, wear the product over clothing or a towel instead of directly against your skin.

Pressure Over the Wrap and Wrap Bunching Warning

Placing pressure over the HeatWrap can increase your chances of experiencing a burn by increasing the transfer of heat to the skin and decreasing the ability of your circulation to remove heat from the skin. This can occur when the Lower Back & Hip HeatWrap is worn under an elastic waistband or under a tight belt. Thus, do not wear the HeatWrap underneath waistbands, belts, or other tight clothing where pressure on the wrap could increase your risk of burns. If the wrap bunches or folds during wear and the heat cells overlap each other, they can get hotter and this can increase your risk of a burn. Make sure to use the product that is designed for the body part you intend to treat. Robax® HeatWraps are specially designed for the lower back, hip, neck and shoulder. Never fold the wrap upon itself and apply it to the skin. Make sure the heat cells lay flat against the skin; you may need to adjust during wear.

Common Questions

Q: What is a Robax® HeatWrap with Thermacare® Technology?

A: It is an air-activated product using real heat that penetrates deeply to soothe and relax tight muscles. It gives 8 hours of relief while you wear it. And the long-lasting relief continues even after you take it off, for up to 16 hours of continuous relief. Apply it right where you hurt for temporary relief of minor muscular and back aches and pains associated with overexertion, strains, sprains and sore, tight muscles.

Q: How does a Robax® HeatWrap with Thermacare® Technology relieve pain and relax muscles?

A: It provides long-lasting pain relief of minor muscular or back aches and pains by delivering deep penetrating heat directly to the site of pain. The heat blocks the transmission of pain signals, and increases blood circulation to relax your sore muscles.

Q: How does a Robax® HeatWrap keep working even after you take it off?

A: Deep heat accelerates blood flow, which helps the natural process of removing toxins from the site of pain. This provides long-lasting pain relief, even after you take a HeatWrap off.

Q: What types of pain does a HeatWrap help?

A: Robax® Neck & Shoulder, and Lower Back & Hip HeatWraps are designed for relief of minor muscular and back aches and pains associated with overexertion, strains, sprains, and arthritis as well as muscle stiffness.

Q: What's the difference between using a HeatWrap and other heat pads/hot water bottles?

A: Hot water bottles, heating pads, and Robax® HeatWraps all provide heat that relieves your muscle pain. But Robax® HeatWraps provide low-level consistent heat that lasts 8 or more hours and because it’s a soft, wearable wrap, it conforms to your body and can be used anywhere, anytime. You can expect long-lasting pain relief, even after you take it off.

Q: What's the difference between using a HeatWrap and taking Oral Pain Relievers?

A: Oral pain medications have to be ingested and provide relief by working through the bloodstream. A HeatWrap provides pain relief by working directly at the site of the pain, allowing you to focus on other things. A HeatWrap also helps relieve muscular pain by relaxing the muscle and increasing local blood flow.

Q: What’s the difference between using a HeatWrap and using a topical pain reliever/cream, gel, rub or patch?

A: Robax® HeatWraps relieve pain without the mess or odour that can be associated with topical pain relievers such as creams, lotions, ointments, gels, or patches. Some topical pain relievers cause blood vessels to expand, which causes a heating sensation; others produce a cooling sensation that may eventually feel like heat. Drawbacks to using topical pain relievers can include stained clothing, stickiness, a burning sensation and unpleasant odours. Even medicated topicals such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory gels, creams or ointments have drawbacks including allergic reactions to the medicinal or non-medicinal ingredients, blistering of the skin, skin sensitivity and/or gastro-intestinal discomfort. While most topical pain relievers only create an alternate sensation at the skin level, the heat from Robax® HeatWraps penetrates deeply into your muscles helping muscles to relax, and increasing local blood flow to help push out the pain. A HeatWrap is odourless and stays on comfortably while conforming to your body’s natural shape, to provide long-lasting pain relief and muscle relaxation.Don’t use HeatWraps on an area of the skin where most topical medicines such as antibiotics, pain relieving creams, hydrocortisone creams, or poison ivy creams have been applied within the past 24 hours. Doing so may cause skin irritation or may alter the effect of the topical medication. Please consult your physician if you have any further questions.

Q: How does increasing blood flow help muscles?

A: One of the functions of your blood is to deliver nutrients and oxygen to parts of your body while removing cellular wastes. By increasing circulatory blood flow, the nutrients required for muscle repair and relaxation are delivered to the affected tissue. This can help your muscles begin to return to their normal state of health.

Q: Warm or cold: what should I use for my pain?

A: Robax® HeatWraps are used for the relief of minor muscular and back aches and pains associated with overexertion, strains, sprains, and arthritis. For injuries that cause bruising or swelling, physicians and pharmacists generally recommend you periodically apply ice during the first 24-48 hours. However, after the swelling and bruising have subsided (about 48 hours after the injury), heat has been found to effectively provide pain relief. If you’re still unsure, consult your physician or pharmacist – they’ll be able to give you further advice.

Q: I don’t suffer from pain very often; will HeatWraps still be effective for me?

A: There is no data that shows less frequent pain sufferers have greater or lesser pain relief than more frequent pain sufferers when using HeatWraps. Most people who suffer from occasional muscular tension, muscular/back aches and pains, or discomfort should experience relief when using HeatWraps.

Q: How do I know if my skin is sensitive to heat?

A: There are many factors that determine a person's skin sensitivity to heat. Everyone's body responds differently to heat, and the best way to measure your sensitivity is to periodically check your skin under the heat cells for signs of skin irritation or burns, especially when trying the product for the first few times. With age, the skin becomes thinner and your circulation changes. So your skin might develop a burn at a lower temperature than it would have when you were younger. If you feel your sensitivity to heat has changed over time, check your skin frequently when using heat. Please consult your physician if you have any further questions.

Q: What about sweating? Will perspiration affect the heat?

A: Average body perspiration will not affect the wrap's performance.

Q: What sizes of Robax® HeatWraps are available?

A: All Robax® HeatWraps are available in one size.

Q: How many wraps are in a carton?

A: The Lower Back & Hip HeatWraps contain three wraps per carton. The Neck & Shoulder version contains four wraps per carton. Smaller (1-count) and larger (6-count) sizes of the Lower Back & Hip version are available at select retailers.

Q: How long should I wear a HeatWrap?

A: Robax® heat wraps provide up to 16 hours of heat: 8 while the HeatWrap is being worn, and up to 8 additional hours of heat after the HeatWrap has been removed. For best results, wear a Robax® HeatWrap for the full 8 hours. If during or after this time, the pain you’re treating remains unchanged or worsens, consult your physician, as this may be a sign of a more serious condition. Wearing Robax® HeatWraps longer than 8 hours can increase the risk of skin irritation or burns.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps while exercising?

A: Yes.

Q: Can I cut the HeatWrap to a different size to fit different areas of my body? I accidentally cut or tore the wrap/patch or damaged the heat cells. Can I still wear it?

A: No. Cutting the HeatWrap may damage the heat cells. Damaged heat cells can lead to increased risk of burning and we do not recommend using a HeatWrap that has damaged or cut heat cells. If the HeatWrap is damaged or ruptured, contain the contents and dispose of it properly. If ingested, rinse your mouth with water and call a poison control centre immediately. If the heat cell contents come in contact with your skin or eyes, rinse right away with water.

Q: How many HeatWraps can I use at one time? Sometimes I need help in more than one area.

A: You can safely wear more than one HeatWrap, but it’s important that you don’t overlap the heat cells. Also do not wear more than one HeatWrap in the same location. We also recommend caution if you’re wearing something that presses against the heat cell area. Our safety tips advise periodically checking your skin if you’re wearing a tight fitting belt or waistband over the HeatWrap.

Q: Can I wear a HeatWrap on other parts of my body (e.g., ankle, head, etc.)?

A: Each HeatWrap or patch has been designed to fit comfortably while delivering 8 hours of low level heat in close contact with the skin. We made them for a specific part of the body. Robax® HeatWraps haven't been tested for use on other body areas. We’re sorry if none of our current designs fit the area you want to treat.

Q: Can I wear a HeatWrap before it has fully warmed up?

A: Yes. Although it might give you a different perception of the heat level since the product will be gradually warming up on your body (within 30 minutes) instead of being placed there after warming up. The actual heat level should be the same with either application method.

Q: How do I remove the adhesive on the Neck & Shoulder Wrap from my skin?

A: Removing the Neck & Shoulder wrap from your skin is comparable to removing a bandage. We recommend peeling it slowly from your skin.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps for arthritis pain?

A: If you have osteoarthritis, heat therapy has been found to be helpful in providing temporary relief of the back aches and pains associated with this form of arthritis. HeatWraps provide an effective, portable source of heat when used as directed and will help relax and soothe your aching back muscles. If you have rheumatoid arthritis (a much less common form of arthritis), you should talk with your physician before using any type of heat (including Robax® HeatWraps) to determine if heat is helpful for this condition. If you’re unsure as to which type of arthritis you have, you should talk with your physician before using HeatWraps.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps with oral pain relievers?

A: Please consult your physician.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps with medicated rubs/creams/ointments or topical antibiotics?

A: No, do not use HeatWraps on an area of the skin where other topical medicines (such as topical antibiotics, pain relieving creams, hydrocortisone creams, or poison ivy creams) have been applied within the past 24 hours, because it may cause injury to the skin or may alter the effect of the topical medication.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps with creams/lotions/oils/moisturizers/aromatherapy oils?

A: We do not have data on the effect of wearing HeatWraps against skin where lotions, creams, moisturizers, or aromatherapy oils have been applied. These products may contain some of the same ingredients as medicated rubs, creams, and ointments, and we don’t recommend wearing HeatWraps where these products have been applied, as skin irritation may develop. In addition, lotions and oils may make it difficult for the adhesives on our products to stick to the skin.

Q: Can I wear HeatWraps with a Medical Patch?

A: Do not wear a Robax® HeatWrap over a medicinal patch. If you are concerned about using medicinal patches (including Estrogen, Nitroglycerin, smoking cessation, weight loss, etc.), while using a heat product, please talk with your physician or pharmacist before use.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps with blood pressure medication, heart medication, blood thinners or antibiotics?

A: We do not have data on the effect of using HeatWraps while taking these medications. While we do not expect you to experience problems, if you are concerned about using heat products, please talk with your physician or pharmacist. They will be able to advise you on your specific situation, and determine whether HeatWraps are right for you.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps over scars?

A: As with any heating product, it is not recommended to use HeatWraps if you have any condition that causes a reduction in circulation or skin sensitivity. If you have these conditions and wish to use HeatWraps, consult your physician. Also there is an increased risk of burning if heat is applied to skin that is broken or damaged (such as a scar) or any area of the body where heat cannot be felt. Heat products also should not be used with medicated lotions, creams or ointments or on persons who cannot remove the product themselves (including young children).

Q: Can I wear HeatWraps while going through a metal detector (such as at airport security)?

A: Robax® HeatWraps should not set off security devices that detect metals. If you are concerned about HeatWraps setting off a metal detector, we suggest you carry an open pouch with you to illustrate what HeatWraps are, and what they contain (iron) in the event that a security system does detect the HeatWrap.

Q: Can I re-use a HeatWrap if I don’t wear it the full 8 hours?

A: Robax® HeatWraps were designed to provide heat therapy for long lasting, powerful pain relief and muscle relaxation, anytime, anywhere. But because of the technology, each wrap can be used only once. If you wish to spread the 8 hours of heat over more than one occasion, you may try placing the HeatWrap in an airtight resealable freezer bag. This may pause the reaction and allow you to resume your heat therapy session at a later time.HeatWraps work by using iron particles which, when exposed to air, start reacting. This reaction gives off heat, but once the iron is used up, it can’t be reactivated or recharged. So, after the product stops heating, it won’t reheat and should be disposed of properly.HeatWraps should not be used in microwave ovens. A HeatWrap may catch on fire.

Q: How and where should I store Robax® HeatWraps? How long can I keep a HeatWrap before using it?

A: HeatWraps should be stored at room temperature. We recommend keeping HeatWraps in their original carton to protect the foil pouch from being punctured or damaged. If air gets into the pouch the heating action will begin.Robax® HeatWraps have an expiration date shown on the packaging. This date indicates the time period during which the wraps should perform as intended. We do not recommend using the wraps after this date since they may not heat reliably.

Q: How will I know whether HeatWraps have heated up to the correct temperature?

A: A HeatWrap has warmed up when it feels warm to the touch. Use the inside of your wrist to test for warmth. Extensive testing has shown that HeatWraps heat to about 40°C (104°F) within 30 minutes and maintain this temperature for 8 hours.

Q: The HeatWrap doesn't feel like it's working. How long does it take for a HeatWrap to warm up?

A: HeatWraps take approximately 30 minutes to warm up once the airtight wrapper has been opened.

Q: Why did the HeatWrap stay hot longer than 8 hours?

A: Robax® heat wraps provide up to 16 hours of heat: 8 while the Heat Wrap is being worn, and 8 additional hours of heat after the HeatWrap has been removed. HeatWraps are designed to provide the same level of heat for the 8 hours you wear it, but sometimes a HeatWrap will actually last longer and may still feel warm (it will slowly cool). We recommend using the product no longer than 8 hours in a day. NOTE: Robax® HeatWraps should not be worn for more than 8 hours consecutively, but you will feel the therapeutic effects of the deep penetrating heat for an additional 8 hours.

Q: Should I be concerned about being burned by the product?

A: HeatWraps have been thoroughly tested for safety, and most people will be able to use them without experiencing any discomfort. However, as with any heating product, there is a risk of prolonged skin redness or burns for some people. HeatWraps should not be worn for more than 8 hours in one day. Check skin frequently during use. If you find irritation or a burn, remove the product immediately. Please see packaging for complete safety tips and usage instructions.

Q: How often should I check my skin for signs of irritation or burning?

A: If you have sensitive skin, check every couple of hours or at any time you feel discomfort. If your skin looks or feels as if it might be burning or irritated, remove the HeatWrap. It’s normal to notice slight redness immediately after removing the HeatWrap. Always read the package insert before using the product.

Q: How will I know if I have been burned by a HeatWrap?

A: It’s normal to experience temporary skin redness immediately after removing the HeatWrap. If you experience skin irritation or discomfort while wearing a Robax® HeatWrap, or if the product feels too hot, discontinue use immediately. After removing the HeatWrap, if you continue to experience discomfort, burning, swelling, rash or other changes in your skin that persist where the HeatWrap was worn, consult your physician.

Q: Can I wear HeatWraps while sleeping?

A: If you're under 55 years of age, you can wear HeatWraps while sleeping. Products should not be worn overnight if you are over 55 years old.

Q: Can my pet sleep on or wear a HeatWrap?

A: We do not have any data on the effect of using HeatWraps on a pet. We do not recommend the use of HeatWraps on your pet. The iron within the heat cells poses a risk to a pet if it ingests the HeatWrap, so we recommend you keep it out of the reach of pets (and children).

Q: My pet ate part of my HeatWrap; what should I do?

A: Our packaging recommends that HeatWraps be kept out of reach of children and pets since some of the ingredients in HeatWraps can pose a health risk if the product is ingested. Please contact your veterinarian; they should be able to answer any of your concerns regarding your pet.

Q: What can I do if I find the HeatWrap is too hot on my skin?

A: HeatWraps have been designed to deliver a comfortable, well-controlled level of heat that lasts at least 8 hours. Of course this does not mean it is the right amount of heat for everybody. We apologize that the wrap feels too hot for you. You may want to try wearing HeatWraps over a thin layer of clothing instead of directly against your skin. If you still feel the level is too high, you should remove the product.

Q: Why does the HeatWrap feel hotter, especially when I sit or bend?

A: There are certain situations when heat cells might have increased contact or pressure with your skin. When this happens, the product could feel warmer to you. Prolonged exposure to these types of situations could increase your risk of skin irritation or burning. Be sure not to wear a tight-fitting belt or waistband over the product or lean against the product while wearing it.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps if I am pregnant?

A: You should consult with your physician if you are pregnant and experiencing pain and intend to use any pain relief products, including HeatWraps. Your physician will be able to advise you on your specific circumstance, and determine whether HeatWraps are right for you at this time.

Q: Can I use HeatWraps if I am nursing?

A: We do not expect you to experience problems. However, because infant skin is delicate, we suggest you take care not to lay the baby directly on the HeatWrap. But if you are concerned about using heat products while nursing, please talk with your physician.

Q: Why do I need to ask my physician before use if I’m diabetic?

A: Diabetes is a complicated disease that sometimes causes poor blood circulation and decreased skin sensitivity and feeling. Since some diabetics may be more susceptible to skin irritation, skin injury or even burns than others, they should first consult with their physician to determine if HeatWraps are right for them.

Q: Can young children wear HeatWraps?

A: We do not recommend the use of HeatWraps for anyone, including children under 12 years of age, who may not be able to remove a HeatWrap on their own if they feel discomfort.

Q: Why can't I use HeatWraps on areas with bruising or swelling?

A: Heat may aggravate the injury if used on areas of swelling or bruising. Physicians and pharmacists generally recommend using ice periodically in the first 24-48 hrs for injuries that can cause bruising or swelling. However, after 48 hours, heat such as that provided by Robax® HeatWraps has been found to effectively provide pain relief. Consult your physician or pharmacist for more information.

Q: What if the adhesive won’t stick/reattach?

A: Robax® HeatWraps have been designed to stay in place through normal daily activities. Most people won’t have to worry about them coming off. The conditions that can cause adhesive failure are physical activities, perspiration and oils or lotions that have been applied to the skin where HeatWraps will be worn. Skin oils can also affect a HeatWrap’s ability to stay in place. We’ve found it’s best to apply the product to skin that is dry and free of oils and lotions.

Q: What do I do if the adhesive is difficult to remove?

A: If you feel that the adhesive is too difficult to remove from your skin without causing irritation, you might try using mineral oil or baby oil on a cotton ball or swab to help loosen the attachment. Just continue dabbing the oil under the edge where the product is attached and gently work the adhesive away from the skin. If you use oil to remove the product, you will not be able to reattach it.

Q: What are the heat cells in HeatWraps? How do they work?

A: The heat cells with Thermacare® Technology are the part of a Robax® HeatWrap that provide warmth. These cells contain a mixture of ingredients (activated charcoal, iron powder, sodium chloride, sodium thiosulfate, sodium polyacrolate and water) that react with the air to provide low-level heat. The chemical reaction is called iron oxidation, which occurs naturally in the environment.

Q: What materials are HeatWraps made of and what holds a HeatWrap together?

A: Robax® HeatWraps are made from soft, cloth-like synthetic materials. The layers of the product are held together with a specially formulated construction adhesive designed to stand up to normal use.

Q: What is the temperature of HeatWraps after they have heated up? How hot does it get?

A: Each heat cell is designed to heat to about 40°C (104°F) for 8 hours. This temperature is just above your body's normal core temperature of 37°C (98.6°F).

Q: What are the functions of the ingredients in the heat cells?

A: Iron reacts with oxygen in the air to provide heat in a process called iron oxidation.Sodium chloride (salt) speeds up the rate of reaction between iron and oxygen.Sodium thiosulfate controls hydrogen generation.Water is also necessary for the iron oxidation reaction.Charcoal allows the iron powder to have a surface to react inside the heat cells. The surface of this charcoal has been treated (“activated”) to have special properties.Sodium polyacrylate controls the level of water present in the heat cell.

Q: If these HeatWraps are air-activated, how do you package them without exposing them to air?

A: HeatWraps begin to activate before they’re put in the foil pouch. Once the pouch is sealed and the air inside the pouch has been used up, the wrap stops heating. Even though they’re exposed to the air for a very short time, this does not affect performance. HeatWraps last 8 hours.

Q: Why are the HeatWraps disposable? Why can I only use the wrap once?

A: HeatWraps were designed to provide heat therapy for long-lasting powerful pain relief and muscle relaxation. They can be combined with a return to normal activities as recommended by current therapeutic guidelines. Because a HeatWrap was designed to be used anytime, anywhere, it wasn't possible to make it reusable.HeatWraps work by using iron particles which, when exposed to air, will start reacting. This reaction gives off heat. Once the iron is used up it cannot be reactivated or recharged. So once the product stops heating, it should be thrown away.

Q: How do I dispose of a HeatWrap?

A: HeatWraps can be disposed of in your regular trash. To be safe, dispose of a HeatWrap 8 hours after it is out of the primary foil package. Care should be taken to keep HeatWraps out of the reach of children and animals.

Q: Is a HeatWrap recyclable?

A: No, HeatWraps are not recyclable. Recyclable products such as paper, plastic and glass fall into a single material category. HeatWraps are made from several different materials, which means recyclers won’t accept them.

Q: Is a HeatWrap biodegradable?

A: No, HeatWraps are not biodegradable. To reduce waste as much as possible, HeatWrap designs are thin and lightweight. Most landfills, in an attempt to prevent the release of gases and to prevent ground water contamination, are actually designed to limit biodegradation.

Q: Is a HeatWrap compostable?

A: No, a HeatWrap isn’t compostable and should be disposed of in your regular trash.

Q: Can I re-heat/re-charge my HeatWrap after it stops working?

A: No. Any attempt to re-heat the product can result in a fire.

Q: Can I wash a HeatWrap?

A: Do not wash or moisten a HeatWrap because it will deactivate the heat cells. While excessive moisture or wetness will affect the ability of the heat cells to heat efficiently, average body perspiration will not affect their performance.
