Medication
There are a number of different types of medications used to relieve back pain. Some are available over-the-counter; others require a doctor’s prescription.
Although some pain medicines take several weeks before they begin to provide relief, most are designed to be taken only for short periods of time. If you require medication for longer than the time limit recommended on the package, you should be under a doctor’s care. No medicine—including over-the-counter drugs—should be taken carelessly. All medicines have potential risks as well as benefits and can cause side effects.
Make sure your doctor knows about all of the medications you are taking (including herbal and other complementary products) in order to prevent dangerous drug interactions. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you understand what you need to know about the medicines you take.
